Live a Clean Life
In Bhagavad Gita verse 7.28 Lord Krishna says
yeshaam tvanta gatam paapam / janaanaam punyaPious activities; actions that elevate the soul. karmanaam
te dvandva moha nirmuktaa / bhajante maam drda vrataah
“Persons who have acted piously in previous lives and in this life and whose sinful actions are completely eradicated are freed from the dualities of delusion, and they engage themselves in My service with determination.“
Srila Prabhupada in his purport explains, that our life should be crystal clear, free of all the sinful activities, then only we will be able to worship Krishna with firm determination as explained in the above verse. Srila Prabhupada insists that for one who has followed the regulative principles throughout his life and performed devotional service, only that person is eligible to rise to the pure knowledge of Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is possible in Krishna Consciousness in association of devotees. Our beloved Gurudev HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj says, “All these regulative principles have not come out of Srila Prabhupada’s pocket. They are based on Srimad Bhagavatam.” Gurudev narrates one incident of Parikshit Maharaj and Kaliyuga Personified. Parikshit Maharaj once saw a shudraThe fourth varna; a member of that varna, an artisan or labourer. person beating a cow. He was upset and wanted to kill him, but KaliA fierce form of Devi. personified surrendered to Parikshit Maharaj. As Kaliyuga had no place to stay, he requested for a place to stay. So Parikshit Maharaj said, “You are a bad person so you should reside in these four places. Wherever gambling takes place, intoxication takes place, where illicit connection take place and at the slaughter houses, where animals are cut for sense gratification. “
Since KaliA fierce form of Devi. personified resides in these four sinful places, Srila Prabhupada established the vedicConnected to, or derived from, the Vedas. Specifically, the period when the four Vedas were compiled. principles of No meat eating, No intoxication, No gambling and No illicit sex. In this way Srila Prabhupada has actually helped us in giving up sinful life. This is the way of getting free from sinful activities. When we chant the Holy Names, we become firm in devotional service towards Krishna. Gurudev explains, that from the first line of the above verse, (yeshaam tvanta gatam paapam), we come to know that we have to put an end to our sins. Also Caitanya Mahaprabhu explains in his Shikshaashtakam, how to do that. He says ‘ceto darpana maarjanam‘ i.e – “If you want to clean your mind than you have to continuously chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare.”
Further in the second line, (janaanaam punyaPious activities; actions that elevate the soul. karmanaam) Krishna says that one should have credit of pious activities in previous life or in this life. If one doesn’t have pious credits then its duty of devotees to create pious credits for them through Harinam parties and Nagar sankirtan. By our clothes people should remember Krishna. By our behavior, people should remember Krishna. And if they do it, then unknowingly they build pious activities. But as soon as they see us again and again, as soon as they hear Krishna’s kirtan"glorification." It usually refers to the chanting of mantra to musical accompaniment. from our mouth again and again, they taste prasadam again and again they build up their pious activity. This is the way to eradicate the sinful tendencies. We should serve devotees as stated in Bhagavatam 5.5.2 that “if one actually wants to get liberated then he must render service to devotees. This helps us in building pious activities for ourselves.”
And then as soon as the sinful activities are eradicated, ‘te dvandva moha nirmuktaa‘, they become free from illusion. Simply sitting and chanting Mahamantra will build up the pious credits. Serving devotees builds up pious credits. And when your pious credits are built, then duality from your mind is completely eradicated. Now what is this duality ? Dvandva. It is ignorance. In ignorance, “we think my house is permanently mine, my bank balance is permanently mine. My shop belongs to me, my wife/husband belongs to me. And all the paraphernalia which I have now is permanently mine.” Ishvaroham aham bhogi – Sidhoham, balavaan sukhi – these are the ignorant tendencies
Ishvaroham – I am the controller
Aham bhogi – I am the enjoyer
Sidhoham – I am perfect
Balavaan – I am strongest
Sukhi – I am very happy
This is ignorance. And because of this ignorance sins increase. Forget about nullifying them. So by building pious activities, one gets free from duality illusion, “dvandva moha nirmukta”. Once you are free from duality of illusion, you start “bhajante Maam” – ‘Worshipping Me‘ and how ? – ‘drdha vratah‘ by being firm in your devotional practice. So how to come to the platform of pure devotional service ?
- By giving up all sinful activities
- Building pious credits
- Thereby getting freed from Illusion of Ignorance
- And then start worshipping Krishna with full Determination
I pray to the lotus feet of our Gurudev that I be determined in devotional service and improve my behaviour and remember Krishna and if GuruA spiritual teacher; a regular teacher may also be called guru. and Krishna wills, help others remembering Krishna as well.Moderator note : HG Vinaysheela Mathaji is a humble, sincere and enthusiastic devotee living along with her prabhuji HG Sumedha Krishna Prabhu in MadhyaPradesh. They were inspired by Gurudev’s vani and took shelter of him early this year. Both Prabhuji and Mathaji are very intelligent and well-educated. Mathaji was a software engineer earlier and now a home-maker. Prabhuji serves the Indian army and even in tough circumstances, very sincerely does his sadhanaSpiritual discipline, such as chanting mantras, observing vows, etc.. They start the day by listening Maharaj’s lectures at 4 am followed by Mangala-arathi and chanting. They both enthusiastically read Srila Prabhupada’s books with dedication and shares the message of Krishna consciousness with everyone.
