Please Come to Krishna Bhakti – 1
In a lecture delivered on 15th March 1992 in Singapore, our beloved GuruA spiritual teacher; a regular teacher may also be called guru. Maharaj very very lovingly explains the reason why the scriptures have been written and the way to get attracted to the scriptures. The following is a transcription of that lecture.
The thing is that we have to understand why the scriptures are written. Because we do not know the reason of these scriptures, it becomes very difficult for us to understand the scriptures and it becomes very difficult for us to be attracted to the scriptures. We are not attracted, frankly speaking. We always keep aside. We have Bhagavad Gita since so many years, may be 100 years you have Bhagavad gita in your house but never have we opened it because we do not know what is written, who has written and what is the use of it is. Can we get Dollars if we read it? If we get Dollars, we will read. But we do not get dollars. That is the trouble with these scriptures and that is why we are not attracted to them. It is very nicely said in Srimad Bhagavatam that why VyasaAlso called Badarayana; an important sage credited with writing many important texts. Bhagavan took trouble to put these high universal truths and the spiritual reality in the words. It is very nicely said by Him in one beautiful verse. Srimad Bhagavatam 1.7.6
anarthopashamam saakshaad / bhaktiThe path of loving devotional service (also Bhakti-YogaThe path of loving devotional service; also called bhakti marg.).-yogam adhokshaje
lokasyaajaanato vidvaams / cakre saatvata-samhitaam
“The material miseries of the living entity, which are superfluous to him, can be directly mitigated by the linking process of devotional service. But the mass of people do not know this, and therefore the learned Vyasadeva compiled this VedicConnected to, or derived from, the Vedas. Specifically, the period when the four Vedas were compiled. literature, which is in relation to the Supreme Truth.“
Very nice verse. Very beautiful verse. It describes why these scriptures are written by Vyasadeva, why these principles are put into words and if you understand this, then it is very easy to be attracted to it. Once we are attracted to something, then we leave everything aside and go to that thing to which we are attracted. The thing is in the first line. Vyasa bhagava describes “anartha upashamam“- means all kinds of miseries and there are threefold miseries. They are known as “tri taapa” in Sanskrit. Tri means three. It is very near to Sanskrit. English is very near to Sanskrit. Long long ago, from our country people had to go away because there were so many invasions. Mohammedans were coming and Huns were coming. So many people were attacking India because India from the beginning is a very pious country and not only pious country but we have so many rivers. They are so very sweet. You go to Mayapur and you see the sweet ocean. Ganges, how big it is and now it is coming nearer and nearer our compound, may be within few years we will be able to take bath within our own compound. Never in other countries I have seen rivers so very nice. Every second it is flowing. You can’t have dirty water even if you want to have it. In other countries, you cannot have clean water. You have to have dirty water. In England what we are drinking I don’t know really what, seven times the water is recycled and that water we drink. Is it water or purified urine? What is it and they want to call that country as the first country you know, advanced. What is advancement? To drink purified urine? In India we drink very clear water and it is third world. First world drink urine and in third world because you are drinking clean water you are third world. You have to decide what third world is and what first world is. This is misleading.
So Vyasa Bhagavan knew very well that these things are going to come and that is why he has given the reason “anartha upashamam”- mitigation of all these miseries.
1. Miseries arising out of our own body and mind
2. Other living entities inflicting misery
3. Even Krishna tries to give miseries in the form of earth quakes and floods
These are the three miseries we have to tolerate. We have to tolerate. There is no other way you can escape. The bodily miseries are bound to come and mind will create miseries and mind when it is your enemy it will drag you away from the scriptures. It will never help you to open the scriptures. As soon as you try to open, it will say, you have to go to market to buy cameras and immediately we run to buy the camera. Mind will say, “No . no. you are very important person. Don’t waste time reading scriptures. You have to do very important work.”
Actually that important work is completely temporary. This way your mind also becomes your enemy. Unless we understand by our intelligence the importance of these scriptures, we will not be able to read it and Vyasa devaGod; sometimes translated demigod. God is often called Deva-deva, "gods of gods." Devi"goddess"; used to refer to any female deity, but most specifically Shakti, wife of Shiva. means "goddess." gives the way to understand the importance.
Maharaj was referring to the verse 1.7.6 of Srimad Bhagavatam
anarthopashamam saakshaad / bhakti-yogam adhokshaje
lokasyaajaanato vidvaams / cakre saatvata-samhitaam
“The material miseries of the living entity, which are superfluous to him, can be directly mitigated by the linking process of devotional service. But the mass of people do not know this, and therefore the learned Vyasadeva compiled this Vedic literature, which is in relation to the Supreme Truth.“
All the miseries which you are facing, if you want to get rid of, you have to come to the point of bhakti yogaUnion, most specifically with the Supreme; any practice aimed at such realisation. The yoga of devotion to Krishna.. Bhakti to whom? We have bhakti but we are Singapore dollar bhaktaAn uninitiated male devotee.. Krishna bhaktas come and they describe very nicely as follows:
adharam madhuram vadanam madhuram
nayanam madhuram hasitam madhuram
hrdayam madhuram gamanam madhuram
madhuraadhi-pater akhilam madhuram
“His lips are sweet, His face is sweet His eyes are sweet, His smile is sweet His heart is sweet, His gait is sweet—Everything is sweet about the Emperor of sweetness!“
That is how the devotees glorify the Lord. This way the devotees come to the Lord and they throw themselves on the ground as a stick. But we.. It is notadharam madhuram. It is
dollarum madhuram wifeum madhuram
car-um madhram putram madhuram
madhuraadhipate akhilam dollarum
We have changed because we are not Krishna bhaktas. We are dollar bhaktas. So we have arranged everything in the dollar sense. This destroys us. This completely kills us. You please please come to Krishna bhakti and then anartha upashamam saakshaad bhakti yogam adhokshaje – your miseries are completely destroyed. This is the medicine for reducing your dhukhas. Do not run around to this man and that man, psychiatrists and doctors and this and that. They will not be able to nullify your miseries. Only Krishna has the capacity to nullify your miseries and if you come to Him I guarantee you will be completely happy -brahmaThe creator (or, some say, secondary creator); one of the trimurti, three main deities in this world. bhuta prasannaatma – if you become brahma bhuta, if you are transcendentally attracted to Krishna, the result is prashaanthatma. Your soul will be completely satisfied. If you want to satisfy yourself there is no other way, no other way, no other way. naasty eva, naasty eva, naasty eva gatir anyathaa. There is no other gati. No other way in which you can satisfy yourself.
You may have millions of dollars. It is very easy in Singapore. But those dollars are the cause of misery. They are not anartha upashamam. If you want that your miseries must reduce or get rid of those miseries, then this is the way and be sincere in your devotional service and devotional service is not a very big thing. You do not have to change your clothes. You don’t have to wear dhotiA piece of cloth about four-metres long and worn by Hindu men to cover the loins and legs.. You go on putting trousers and be punished. In Singapore, to put on trouser is a punishment. Such a hot weather and again you are tying yourself. This is alright in England if you can do it, but England also dhoti is very best. Because it is very easy dress and you can clean it daily. These trousers, we don’t know for six months they don’t wash it. Just go on and put on same same again and again. Full of house mites and completely dirty but we enjoy. We do not want to be Krishna bhaktas. I have a good job and who will put on dhoti? These crazy people will put on and these crazy people are very happy. They are enjoying. There is not even kurtaA loose fitting collarless shirt worn by men. Usually made of cotton or silk. and there is only dhoti and chaadar and he washes in the evening and morning again it is dry. This is how anartha upashamam sakshaad bhakti yogam adhokshaje. He has not told you that by bhakti of dollars, you will get rid of your miseries. He says Krishna bhakti will relieve you. He knew that there are going to be dollars in Singapore. So he could have written that anartha upashamam saakshaad bhakti yogam dollarum. He has not written that. If He writes dollars, I will be the first person to go and run after the dollars. But no. There is no mention of dollars in our scriptures.
We do require dollars. We do not have to stop our work. But the same time, we don’t have to ignore bhakti. With your work, you can very well perform the bhakti activities and they are very easy.
Maharaj explained what are the bhakti activities to be performed and the same shall be posted in the next mail, Krishna willing.
Thank you very much,
Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev,
