“Everywhere you get frustrated. And there are so many fears, you know. There is very nice verse in which there are nine fears described in our lives, you know. This is beautiful verse. [Here is a famous verse of Bhartrihari, from the Vairaagya shatakam, a hundred verses on dispassion]
bhoge rogabhayam, kule chyutibhayam, vitte nrupaalaad-bhayam
maane dainyabhayam, bale ripubhayam, roope jaraayaa bhayam
shaastre vaadibhayam, gune khalabhayam, kaaye krtaantaad-bhayam
sarvam vastu bhayaanvitam bhuvi nrnaam Vairaagyameva abhayam
‘There is fear of disease in the enjoyment of sensual pleasures; fear of decline in lineage; fear of kings in riches; fear of humiliation in honour; fear of enemies when in power; fear of oldage in beauty; fear of disputants in learning; fear of the wicked in virtue and fear of death in embodied souls. All facets of man’s life on earth engender fear. Renunciation alone gives fearlessness.‘
Beautiful verse. Vedic literatures gives you everything. These are the nine fears that is continuously haunting us. The first one is bhoge rogabhayam, the more you try to enjoy, the more diseased you body becomes. Bhogi is always rogi. Bhogi means those persons who are enjoying, they are always rogi, they are always diseased. Unless you control your enjoyment, your body can never be healthy. That is greatest fear for us. We want to enjoy and we want to be healthy body, and both things cannot go together. And that’s why our Vedic culture, particularly Prabhupada’s instructions are that, we are busy from 4′o clock in the morning till 10 ‘o clock at night, so we don’t have much time to enjoy. And our attention somehow or the other is completely diverted from this enjoyment to the devotional service. And because of that we are safe. Within few days even the new bhaktas they join and they start shining. Why ? Because they control. And as soon you control your bhoga, as soon as you control your enjoyment, you become healthy. And those who are diseased, for them also if they have unflinching faith in the devotional service and they follow the devotional activities very seriously, they will have their health intact, without doubt. There is no doubt in it. No doubt at all. Not only that but it is nice to describe. So many verses are coming to my mind but we are controlled by the time.
In Ramrajya, in Lord Ram’s kingdom, ‘mrtyu ca nasi cita masi…‘ Even the death was not there unless they desired. That is Ram. As soon as you chant Ram’s name, as soon you chant Krishna’s name you don’t have death even. That is quality of Krishna’s names and Lord Ram’s names. You cannot have, unless you desire, you cannot die. That is the reward of Krishna Consciousness. And leaving this very sublime science we are running for so many things under different excuses. And we are getting into so many miserable conditions and then blame others for our own miseries. This lunacy has got to be stopped with the study of the scriptures. And this is material reward, immediate. And apart from this prasannaatma. As soon as you perform these activities you become completely prasanna and you are not afraid about your diseased body at all. That is the main thing. In order to drive away the fear we have to come to the scriptures, come to the gurus, come to the instructions given by Krishna Himself and follow them very seriously. Then there will won’t be any fear about bhoge rogabhayam.
Yesterday you (referring to a devotee in the class) heard Krishna Katha for one hour and seriously(laughs) I feel like performing Krishna Katha. I like your face. My face is monkey like(laughs) . See, how nice. This is the reward. Who will leave this life ? Within one night he is completely changed. Yesterday we saw him, he was completely morose, and now see he is shining. And the more he continues the more improvement should be there. Prasanna atma you know. brahma bhuta prasanna atma. Very nice shloka. Brajesh, aye Brajesh Das, you know that shloka. Prasanna atma … Oh you are stone. You should study ok. Show some sentiment. Smile. Come on smile. Jai. He’s smiling (laugh). The point is that unless you are brahma bhuta, you cannot be prasanna atma. Brahma bhuta means the transcendentally situated person. And this is very nice thing. Srila Prabhupada has said very nicely. That Bhuta means ghost and bhuta means living entity also. In Sanskrit these are the two meanings of bhuta. Bhuta means ghost and bhuta means living entity. If you are living entity brahma bhuta, that means you are living entity following Krishna Conscious activities, then you become brahma bhuta. And the result is prasanna atma, you are always joyful. And when you are joyful, you improve. You improve in you health if you are prasanna atma. But if you are not brahma bhuta, then you are only bhuta. So you are ghost, haunted by ghosts. Ordinary people, with all due respects to them, they behave like haunted by ghosts. Sometimes they go to restaurants, sometimes they go to bingo halls, sometimes they are running after pubs. Instead of performing those lunatic activities it is our duty to come to this side. We must stop here. Continue tomorrow. Hare Krishna. There is one minute. Have you anything to ask ? Any comments ?”
Student: “What is the significance of [indistinct] ?”
Maharajji: “The significance is that they had insulted the greatest personality, Siva. And that’s why he was not allowed to have normal beard. Its goat’s beard. The main point is this insults have got to be avoided. Yesterday we discussed in our Syambhu’s house how the insults continues, you know, and destroys you completely. We gave the example of Dronacharya. We’ll discuss sometime, when we have time. In Kali yuga, Kali yuga completely forces us to destroy our time. Please take out some time to study the scriptures. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada ki jai.”
proktam kilaitad bhagavattamena / nivritti-dharmaabhi rataaya tena
sanat-kumaaraaya sa caaha prishtah / saankhyaayanaayaang a dhrita-vrataaya
“Lord Sankarshana thus spoke the purport of Srimad Bhagavatam to the great sage Sanat-kumara, who had already taken the vow of renunciation. Sanat-kumara also, in his turn, when inquired of by Saankhyaayana Muni, explained Srimad Bhagavatam as he had heard it from Sankarshana. “
“Purport by Srila Prabhupada, please hear.
This is the way of the parampara system. Although Sanat-kumara, the well-known great saintly Kumara, was in the perfect stage of life, still he heard the message of Srimad-Bhagavatam from Lord Sankarsana. Similarly, when he was questioned by Saankhyaayana Rsi, he spoke to him the same message he had heard from Lord Sankarsana. In other words, unless one hears from the proper authority one cannot become a preacher. In devotional service, therefore, two items out of the nine, namely hearing and chanting, are most important. Without hearing nicely, one cannot preach the message of Vedic knowledge.”
While singing the invocation prayers, Gurudev said – “We come for the glorification of the Supreme Absolute truth, Krishna which is the perfection of our human existence and He should be glorified with beautiful prayers, nice kirtans and very selected verses from Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. Whenever you are free during the day, PLEASE, learn few verses and learn to sing them very nicely. The first verse is given by Srila Prabhupada is beautiful.
he krsna karuna sindhu / deena bandhu jagat pathe
gopeshaa gopikaa kaantha / radha kaantha namstu te
There is a beautiful verse in 10th chapter of Bhagavad-gita, verse number 12, it gives you 10 qualities of Krishna in two lines. In the whole world in so many so called scriptures, we will never find in two lines 10 qualities of Krishna. They talk of God, but they don’t know what type of God they are talking about. Here in our preliminary spiritual science, the qualities are very nicely described. If you learn this one verse you can talk for the whole of your lifetime.
param brahma param dhaama / pavitram paramam bhavaan
purusham shaasvatam divyam / aadi-devam ajam vibhum
“You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the ultimate abode, the purest, the Absolute Truth. You are the eternal, transcendental, original person, the unborn, the greatest.”
In this verse, there are nearly nine OMs in these two lines. And we have seen now OM is non-different from Krishna. So these verses are non-different from Krishna. Whenever we want to associate with the Supreme Lord, and we do always wish to associate, and that’s why to some extent, we have left the material enjoyment; may not be fully, but to some extent we have controlled our selves. We have become austere. I saw that you were all up today before four o’ clock. That is the best thing to see in our centers. We cannot sleep after four o’ clock now. It has become our second nature. And this is how these austerities should be continued. And austerities on its own is useless. You know in India, they are very austere. For six months they stand on one leg, it’s a big austerity. But that austerity on its own is useless. We getup before four’o clock and we glorify the Lord, and we study the scriptures. We chant our rounds very nicely. Chanting is the root. You sincerely chant your rounds, nobody can guard you whether you are doing sixteen rounds or not or whether you are doing it carefully or not. You have to be on your own guard. We don’t have policemen in the compound of our temple that every policeman will be with you and look whether you are chanting or not. Aye bhakta, what is your name ?”
Bhakta: Das [Indistinct]
Maharajji: Oh jai, very nice Das. Das is chanting? Das, your name is Das?
Bhakta: Yes [Indistinct]
Maharajji: You are chanting alright? How much ?
Maharajji: “[Ha Ha laughs] no not this way. You must chant. Ok? Very nice. And the more you try, keep on chanting.Don’t worry too much about the offences or this. You should keep on chanting. And as soon as you chant your rounds then you can get into these verses very nicely.”
Krishna willing, I shall transcribe the remaining parts of Maharajji’s class on this topic in the forthcoming mails. I pray to the lotus feet of the Gurudeva that i sincerely and thoroughly study, memorize and sing the verses from Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, wake up early, and chant sincerely.
Thank you very much.
Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Gurudeva,
Manohar Krishna Das,
