Below mail is a humble effort to trancribe and translate the Bhagavatam class given by our spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on verse 1.5.11 on June 8 2003 in Alachua.
tad vaag visargo janataagha viplavo
yasmin prati shlokam abaddhavaty api
naamaany anatasya yasho ‘nkitaani yat
shrnvanti gaayanti grnanti saadhavah
“On the other hand, that literature which is full of descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, forms, pastimes, etc., of the unlimited Supreme Lord is a different creation, full of transcendental words directed toward bringing about a revolution in the impious lives of this world’s misdirected civilization. Such transcendental literatures, even though imperfectly composed, are heard, sung and accepted by purified men who are thoroughly honest.”
(Maharaj recited the verse and made everyone recite the verse nicely. Then he asked the devotees to go through the word to word equivalents of the above verse.)
tat — that; vaak — vocabulary; visargah — creation; janataa — the people in general; agha — sins; viplavah — revolutionary; yasmin — in which; prati-shlokam — each and every stanza; abaddhavati — irregularly composed; api — in spite of; naamaani — transcendental names, etc.; anantasya — of the unlimited Lord; yashah — glories; ankitaani — depicted; yat — what; shrnvanti — do hear; gaayanti — do sing; grnanti — do accept; saadhavah — the purified men who are honest.
“In the previous verse 1.5.10, Narada Muni told Vyasa dev – “Those words which do not describe the glories of the Lord, who alone can sanctify the atmosphere of the whole universe, are considered by saintly persons to be like unto a place of pilgrimage for crows. Since the all-perfect persons are inhabitants of the transcendental abode, they do not derive any pleasure there.” This
verse 1.5.11 is just opposite to what was told in verse 10. Here he says, “On the other hand, that literature which is full of descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, forms, pastimes, etc., of the unlimited Supreme Lord is a different creation, full of transcendental words directed toward bringing about a revolution in the impious lives of this world’s misdirected
civilization. Such transcendental literatures, even though imperfectly composed, are heard, sung and accepted by purified men who are thoroughly honest.”
There are two things to be understood here. One is we should chant Krishna’s names daily. Chanting means associating with Lord. That is a must. Once you associate with Lord, next thing is how to lead this life? To understand this we have to go to Bhagavatam daily. We should not think that oswatnly one thing is enough. Mere chanting alone is not enough. Once Srila Bhakti Siddantha
Saraswathi Maharaj Prabhupada thought that he will just do chanting all day and he locked himself in a room and started chanting. After one month, Lord Himself inspired him that he need to go out and preach as well for the welfare of others. Then he came out of the room and established all the 84 mutts after that. This is the point. We should not do only one thing which is beneficial
just for us. We have to see the practical side of life as well and these Bhagavatam verses help us in doing that. Bhagavatam is a very practical science. Srila Prabhupada has written that he wanted to make it as easy as possible, so that practically people can follow.
Just see what is the harm in sitting in Bhagavatam class? Who is stopping us from coming to Mangala arati or Bhagavatam class ? It is only our laziness. Isn’t it ? Laziness or carelessness to be more precise. Otherwise who is stopping us? Houses are here. Temples are there. Mrdanga is there. Harmonium is there. What stops us? Unless we see the practical side of these things, we will not get the taste for Bhagavatam. We may simply chant or hear. But our mind is not inerested. We get so many doubts. We are full of all inebrieties. Except Krishna everything else is here in our mind. This should be understood and instead of holding all rubbish things in the mind, we should banish them and only Krishna should be in our thoughts and mind. This is the practical thing.
Here it is said – “That literature which is full of descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, forms, pastimes, etc., of the unlimited Supreme Lord“. Yesterday we saw that -“Those words which do not describe Lord, such places are pilgrimage for crows.” Our life also is either full of glories of the Supreme Lord or without glories of Lord. We can’t practise both. But our habit is
we think that we glorify Lord for some time and do some nonsense later. This is not correct. Bhagavatam says that foundation should be like this. “On the other hand, that literature which is full of descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, forms, pastimes, etc., of the unlimited Supreme Lord is a different creation.” Different creation – If we also practise then we also
become different creation. No doubt we are in same world. But we will be different because the glories of Lord is situated in our brains. Until our brains are purified by these things, there is no use.
So we need this training in grhastha life. This training will not only help the future generation, but it does lot of good for our own self. We are all going to go anyway. So if we don’t give this training to children now, then we are just killing them. Krishna book is there. Art books related to Krishna are there. All these things should be given to children along with household work. No doubt we have work in kitchen and other things. But simultaneously we should give these things also to children. Then it would become a play thing for them. We should never pamper children. We love our children. But we should engage them in some house-hold work as well.”
Krishna willing, we shall hear more nectar from Gurudev in subsequent mails.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
