Glorify the Supreme Lord – 2
This offering is in continuation of the transcription of the Bhagavatam class given by our spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on verse 1.5.11 on June 8 2003 in Alachua. In previous offering we heard from Maharaj that we should chant Krishna’s names daily as chanting means association with Krishna. After chanting we should also learn from Srimad Bhagavatam as to how to lead our life. Since Bhagavatam is practical science we should apply the same in our life and teach others as well, including the younger generation.
Now let us continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj.
“If children are trained nicely, then mothers will have very less work. (Referring to few children in the audience Maharaj appreciatively said), These children are well trained by their parents. Every day they do mangala arati with their parents and after that they help them in the household work, cleaning the house, toilets etc. There is no difficulty for the mother. We have to be harsh with them sometimes. (Maharaj laughs.) When we pamper the children too much, we spoil them. We love them but too much pampering should not be there. We have to given them this truth - If there is no glorification of Lord in your life, if there is no love for Lord, then its like pilgrimage of crows. Then life becomes complete rubbish. And all perfect persons, who glorify Supreme Lord, don’t take pleasure in these things. We have to learn this first and then teach this to children.
The verse 1.5.11 is very important. Those people who speak about the glories of the Lord, they can make a revolution in the life of misdirected people. We always have misdirected people in our life. Misdirected people eat meat, drink wine and they always talk about these things. They proudly boast about their possessions. I have bought “Microwave oven”. Its just “My crow”. (laughter). Our life is getting wasted in these things. Our life is going to go. We cannot stop it. So these two verses very nicely tells us about people who glorify Krishna and people who don’t glorify Krishna. Some people are in between the two categories. They might not be able to come to temple for mangala-arati. For such people we say that atleast you do mangala-arati wherever you are and whenever you wake up. Atleast you start the process somehow or the other. Lord has given good voice to sing, good home to stay and nice altar as well. It is simply our laziness that is preventing us from singing mangala-arati. Nothing else. Lord is so merciful that He has provided us home and some LakshmiThe goddess of fortune. She is the eternal consort of Vishnu. also. Why don’t you people wake up for mangala arati ? Its just our own fault and nobody else is to be blamed for this. Now please repeat the translation.
“On the other hand, that literature which is full of descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, forms, pastimes, etc., of the unlimited Supreme Lord is a different creation, full of transcendental words directed toward bringing about a revolution in the impious lives of this world’s misdirected civilization. Such transcendental literatures, even though imperfectly composed, are heard, sung and accepted by purified men who are thoroughly honest.“
The man who is following this is a different man. He may stay with us in this world. But he is different person. That is the point. All of us have to live in the same world. But when we follow this we will be different. (Maharaj then made every devotee, including the children in the class, study the translation by-heart ! He patiently waited, corrected and encouraged the devotees to study the translation. Maharaj ki Jai !) The beauty of these verses and translations is that, if the children learn these, then their academic side becomes very easy. Cleverness will be there. It becomes a play-thing for them. Because we are not doing these things, our intelligence will not bloom. So please study. See within no time you all studied the translation. We have to just fill up our life with name, fame, forms and pastimes of the Supreme Lord. See how easy it is ! What is the difficulty in getting this education? I don’t know what stops you from coming to these things.
(When one devotee replied, that though they are unable to remember the verses, Maharaj replied as follows.) You people don’t forget your name. You don’t forget the names of your spouse, children and relatives. Because you keep calling them millions of times. So repetition is there. Similarly please repeat these verses daily. I suggest you that you take two verses, write them down in a small piece of paper and stick it in your kitchen. As you keep cooking dhal, you just look at these verses and recite. While cooking we just use our hands. So our mouth is free. You please use your mouth for studying these verses. But our attention is completely diverted. Our mind should be filled with these verses. But because it is vacant, we start thinking about some misery or other and think we need to buy medicine for this and that. Why are you running behind medicines ? Throw away the medicines in the dustbin and fill-up your mind with these two verses. Leaving these things we think there is block in my nose, there is a block in my ear. I have to put nasal drops, ear drops etc. (Maharaj laughs). Let the blocks be wherever they are. As long as you are alive, do these things. This is our medicine. If we don’t take it, then who else will take it ? Otherwise our life will become like life of crows.
There are crores of people who are not interested in these things. Initially when Srila Prabhupada started these things in India, people were not ready to hear. So he took a steamer and came all the way to America. He knew that if he gives this gift to the foreigners, then Indians will copy it and thats what we did. Otherwise why should he travel all the way upto America, cook alone and take so much austerities ? He wanted sincere hearers. Srila Prabhupada has given us this diamond. What can be more valuable than this ? Our brain should be full of these things – Krishna’s names, fame, forms and pastimes.”
Krishna willing, we will hear more nectar from Gurudev in the subsequent offerings.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
