Glorify the Supreme Lord – 3
This offering is the concluding part of the transcription of Bhagavatam class given by our spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on verse 1.5.11 on June 8 2003 in Alachua. In previous offering we heard from Maharaj that
- We should chant Krishna’s names daily as chanting means association with Krishna.
- After chanting we should also learn from Srimad Bhagavatam as to how lead our life. Since Bhagavatam is practical science we should apply the same in our life and teach others as well, including the younger generation.
- We need to atleast start the process of mangala arati in our life, by doing it daily wherever we are, as soon as we wake up.
- Fill our minds with Krishna’s names, forms and pastimes – by studying atleast two verses daily.
Now let us continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj.
“There are so many verses in Gita and Bhagavatam glorifying the Lord’s names, form and pastime. We should search these verses and study. For example in verse 10.12 of Bhagavad Gita 10 qualities of Krishna are described nicely.
param brahmaThe creator (or, some say, secondary creator); one of the trimurti, three main deities in this world. param dhaama / pavitram paramam bhavaan
purusham shaashvatam divyam / aadi devam ajam vibhum
“Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the ultimate abode, the purest, the Absolute Truth. You are the eternal, transcendental, original person, the unborn, the greatest.”
In these two lines, he has given 10 qualities of the Lord. Then there is another shlok in 8th chapter which gives 8 more qualities. Then in 9th Chapter 18th verse, “gatir bartha prabhuh saakshi” another 12 qualities are described. So in just three verses, we get 30 qualities of the Lord. There are so many unlimited verses sung by NaradaFamous rishi (sage) who acts as the messenger of the devas (gods). He wrote several important texts. Muni, so many unlimited pastimes of the Lord is there in Bhagavatam. They are unlimited because He is Himself unlimited. See the beauty of sentence Srila Prabhupada has arranged – “On the other hand, that literature which is full of descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, forms, pastimes, etc., of the unlimited Supreme Lord is a different creation full of transcendental words directed toward bringing about a revolution in the impious lives of this world’s misdirected civilization.” How nicely he has translated ! Thats why we should only repeat Prabhupada’s language and we should not tell anything else. Don’t miss the words. When you learn the translation, repeat Prabhupada’s words. Don’t add your words. Because Prabhupada’s words are very experienced. He has meditated on each word. We don’t go to him and keep wandering about here and there. He has given everything in his books. If you are not able to read Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, atleast read the small books. Please do something. Fill up your minds, with Krishna and not with rubbish things. Our life is impious and because impiety is there, misdirection is definitely there. To fix both these things we have this different creation. Do you want to sit in a pilgrim place of crows ? If you don’t want, then come to this side and you will become pious and you will be rightly directed. That goes without saying. Then why are you roaming here and there ? Just take the beads in your hand and chant. Don’t keep wondering about the offences. Just chant. And read Srila Prabhupada’s book. Read means, we should read in between the lines.
We have so much of time. May Lord give you full time. You please take out Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam and you find out how Krishna’s names are glorified in these scriptures. Then you do a research on verses that glorify His form, His pastimes etc. When you do the research on your own, you will relish it more. I can just suggest you or direct you. But ultimately you have to do it on your own. Just like how I may suggest you few good restaurants. But you have to find out how to reach there, what to eat there and when you eat, then you will relish the prasadam, similarly you should search for these verses on your own. Instead of roaming around here and there, we should just sit and study these translations. Lets continue with remaining translation – “Such transcendental literatures, even though imperfectly composed, are heard, sung and accepted by purified men who are thoroughly honest.” Just see how beautiful it is. Please try to by-heart the translation by evening. We might not be great souls like SurdasA blind musician famous for his songs, mainly in praise of Krishna. or Srila Prabhupada. We might not know anything. But its my experience that whenever we do anything related to Krishna, when we write anything about Him or speak anything about Him, then everything comes in sequence. It is His mercy. Many a time when we speak we don’t even know how we are speaking, everything falls in a order. This is His mercy. You just try writing. Then you will know. Whatever you write about Him will come out in a sequence. This is known as “abaddhavaty” – irregularly composed. “Such transcendental literatures, even though imperfectly composed, are heard, sung and accepted by purified men who are thoroughly honest.” The adjectives in this sentence should be remembered. Please learn this translation.
People who are attached to this, don’t require fridge or Television. This itself is a big revolution these days. (Maharaj inquires the devotee hosting the program). I don’t see any TV in your house – Do you have one ? (Devotee replies – By your mercy we have given up Television and have saved 50000 Rupees Maharaj. People here spend thousands of rupees every month on cable TV. Maharaj laughs and replied as follows). You are nice mother. TV is source of all disease. If there is no TV, then no disease. You will be healthy if you don’t see TV. See thats why your children have shining faces. I have to wear goggles to look at them. (Maharaj laughs.) Else people become mad watching TV and lose their hair also. Why are we doing these things ? Srila Prabhupada has given so much for us. We should be busy in studying these things and there will be no time for fever to touch us or cold to touch us. We don’t want to engage our mind in these things and then simply keep complaining. We are all in a line to Yamaraj. Please take this medicine. Don’t worry about rain or sunshine. If your life is in these scriptures, then nothing will touch you. Let rain and cold do their job and we will continue with our job. “jivera svarup hoy, krishnera nityaEternal; the five "nitya karmas" refer to the five duties that cannot be given up. das“. This is our job. If you people complain about diseases after these things, then I will fight with you. (Maharaj laughs heartily.)
(One devotee inquires whether this verse is told for the karmis and Maharaj smilingly replied that this shlok is for all of us.) We are also still karmis. But we false take pride that we are devotees and so the scriptures are for karmis. There is a word “Viagata jvar” in Gita. Vigata jvar means material fever. This should be less. One who is free of this material fever, comes to these things. So please study nicely. Jai Srila Prabhupada ki Jai !”
Srila Gurudev ki Jai !
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
